https://www.vanityfair.com/style/story/private-jet-plane-crashes Interesting article about the (relative) lack of safety if you fly on private jets. Fancy fliers are creating a huge boom in private-jet travel, no longer the exclusive province of Fortune 500 companies, Donald Trump, or Taylor Swift. Yet for all the allure of flying private, it’s a rather dangerous luxury.

I always think of @jon-nyc and his statement about trying to sensibly talk with someone who has conspiracies. He can relay it better than I, but basically, every time you give a logical counter argument to one of the conspiracies, the answer is yes, but......... Eventually, you are putting together table of melt points of various ANSI steels. LOL

https://fortune.com/article/pope-francis-vatican-finances-reform/ Even on his deathbed, Pope Francis didn’t pause from pursuing a dogged campaign that distinguished his reign: reforming the Vatican’s infamously troubled finances. On February 27, the pontiff’s 13th day at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital suffering from exhaustion and bronchitis, the pontiff unveiled the formation of a high-level commission assigned to raise donations for helping plug chronic budget deficits. Francis launched the fund-raising enterprise as a gambit aimed at blunting demands by top officials in the Curia, his vast administrative arm, that the leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics halt his drive for deep spending cuts. The bureaucrats bristled at the Pope’s recent draconian moves: Since 2021, he’d slashed salaries for the Church’s 250-odd cardinals three times. In 2023, he nixed the rich housing subsidies for elite staff, and last September for the first time in decades demanded that the Vatican set a rigorous timeline for achieving a “zero deficit” regime. Quite an interesting story on the finance reforms that Pope Francis tried (and partially succeeded) with the Catholic Church

True. The tea party movement in 2010 was (seemingly) an anti-demo/Obama reaction to his substantial 2008 victory (and executed mostly at the local level in the midterms) whereas 2016 and 2024 it seems were a similar "pendulum" reaction to the woke/BLM/America-shaming movement prior to those elections, but executed this time with the alpha dog in the oval office. One could hope eventually the pendulum will stay in the middle for longer than we've seen recently. But if McCain couldn't do it and we see folks like Bernie or Trump pulling their extremes, I'm not holding out hope.

If the MAGA contingent were bigger, there could be a risk certainly with defaulting unlimited power to Trump but it seems there's enough opposition as well as military people with spines (like Milley) who know when to put country over self.

A friend sent this: Why did Gal Gadot agree to star in the film “Snow White”? Because it was a bomb primarily intended for children.

@LuFins-Dad said in What are you watching now?: @Doctor-Phibes said in What are you watching now?: @George-K said in What are you watching now?: The Silo books were written by Hugh Howey. Read the books - they're great. I loved the books, too - I read the whole series very quickly I just watched the first episode of the TV Series. Should I stop and go read the books? I haven't seen the TV series as I don't have Apple TV, but yes!

The New York Times did not libel former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in a 2017 editorial that contained an error she claimed had damaged her reputation, a jury concluded Tuesday. A retrial of Sarah Palin's case against 'New York Times' begins Monday The jury deliberated a little over two hours before reaching its verdict. A judge and a different jury had reached the same conclusion about Palin's defamation claims in 2022, but her lawsuit was revived by an appeals court. https://www.npr.org/2025/04/22/g-s1-62157/new-york-times-alaska-governor-sarah-palin-libel

@jon-nyc said in RFK Jr is banning food dyes: Ban food dyes but pathogens are ok. https://x.com/moreperfectus/status/1914690295255417204?s=46 The Reuters article actually has a little bit more information… the laboratory was already set to be decommissioned before the staff cuts and though proficiency testing would be paused during the transition to a new laboratory, dairy product testing will continue. and The FDA's proficiency testing programs ensure consistency and accuracy across the nation's network of food safety laboratories. Laboratories also rely on those quality control tests to meet standards for accreditation. So in other words. The milk is still being safety tested for pathogens, and the regulatory lab that acts as an oversight committee and makes sure the other labs processes are consistent is shutting down while moving to a new location. It’s hardly the scenario being painted by the Twitter feed and the replies
